Rosta helped perfect a piece of farming equipment.

Rosta Inc. has spent 33 years making a difference in Canada, and its parent company has done the same worldwide for more than three-quarters of a century. The corporation’s lengthy track record of success stories includes the time it custom-designed a high-quality rubber component for a multi-functional machine in Pertuis, France.

Manufactured for agricultural applications by PELLENC SAS, this piece of equipment needed a special solution several years ago.

High productivity and yield

Since 1973, PELLENC has manufactured machines and tools that facilitate labour and improve productivity for agriculture, green spaces, and urban communities. This machine, the PELLENC OPTIMUM, could conduct pre-pruning, spreading, leaf stripping, spraying, and harvesting tasks. But when the company optimized the yield, the PUR inserts in the machine failed, resulting in numerous issues. The inserts disintegrated too quickly when amplitude and vibration were increased.

The PELLENC team had to replace all of the inserts – and urgently, since it was the middle of the harvesting season. To get the best solution in a timely fashion, the company contacted Rosta.

The customer’s situation brought two challenges to the Rosta crew. A reliable and durable solution was needed, and Rosta had to present it as soon as possible, since PELLENC was planning to hold a test campaign in a few weeks. So Rosta produced several different rubber mixtures and picked three of them for the tests. Of the three proposed rubber mixtures, one withstood all the harsh test conditions that were provided in France, Spain, and Argentina.

Dubbed the Rubmix, the rubber component that Rosta proposed had a rubber quality based on a high contact of natural rubber (caoutchouc); it also offered good shape memory, small settling factors (cold flow), high mechanical load capacities, and moderate aging behaviour.

When PELLENC adopted the rubber component, it saw instant benefits – no efficiency loss over the machine’s lifespan, no failure during harvest, high productivity, and higher yield. “Rosta has provided us with the perfect solution to eliminate all previous problems and to improve the productivity of every plant insatiably,” said Alexandre Rogier, PELLENC’s studies engineer.
