POSITAL absolute rotary encoders (right) and inclinometers: Now available with Modbus RTU interface – using the RS485 transmission standard

POSITAL-Fraba is always upgrading its products to boost their performance while complying with evolving customer demand. Most recently, the company has expanded its line of IXARC rotary encoders and TILTIX inclinometers – offering new models with the Modbus RTU interface. These new units are available in a broad range of mechanical configurations.

The Modbus RTU interface has been around for nearly 40 years and is popular in solar installations these days. It adds considerable versatility to the IXARC series.

Inexpensive and easy to implement

Inexpensive and easy to implement, the Modbus RTU interface is a communication protocol used frequently in medium-sized control systems up to 32 nodes, and many PLC manufacturers support it. The interface is also used in packaging lines and mobile machinery. It employs the RS485 transmission standard, which is based on shielded twisted pair cabling; this combination communicates reliably over distances exceeding one kilometre, even when electromagnetic interference is present.

Customers can choose from different kinds of housing material, environmental protection, shaft type and diameter, mounting flange, and connector type, as well as between single- or multi-turn measurement ranges. Multi-turn units have rotation counters powered by Wiegand sensors, which harvest energy from rotation of the device’s shaft. This way, every full rotation is recorded reliably, even when no power is available for the control system. Maintenance expense is virtually nonexistent, as the interfaces requires neither backup batteries or complex gear systems.

This Modbus support enhances both IXARC rotary encoders and TILTIX inclinometers. The latter devices are used in any applications in which monitoring the tilt angle of equipment or components is vital, such as solar panels, material-handling equipment, and safety systems for mobile machinery.

It is easy for customers to find the appropriate rotary encoders or inclinometers with POSITAL’s online Product Finder tool. This unique function allows visitors to the POSITAL website to specify product features needed for their projects and narrow it down quickly to the most suitable options. Sensors are typically built and shipped within a few days, regardless of their special features, thanks to the digital Mass Customization production system.
