ATEX motor base

A wood-processing company in Italy benefited from using a Rosta motor base.

For more than 75 years – including three decades here in Canada – Rosta has kept companies competitive with its mastery of technology. Its machine components and elements have spurred a long record of success stories around the world. One example happened in Colzate, Italy two years ago, when the company recommended an ATEX motor base for a wood-processing facility’s safety issues.

A new oscillating screen

Although best known as a metalworking manufacturer, CMC Texpan has expanded into the woodworking industry since it was founded in 1962. In early 2017, the company was developing a new EX-version of its standard oscillating screen for wood processing at its Colzate facility. But there was one major issue: the facility could not rule out an outbreak of flames. In a wood-processing environment, any single spark source is a potential hazard, resulting in frequent fires in the sector.

CMC Texpan needed a solution, and quickly. So the company contacted Rosta for advice.

The customer needed to develop a screen for enclosed areas, one that could internally suppress a possible fire outbreak and thus prevent an explosion from the wood dust during plant operation. Rosta recommended an ATEX-compliant motor base for this purpose.

This Rosta ATEX motor base was designed to be used in environments with explosive gas of the IIC group, a temperature class of T5, or combustible dust with a maximum surface temperature of 100 degrees Celsius. It was designed according to the ATEX 94/9/EC Directive, as well as the relevant European Harmonized Standards EN 1127-1:2011, EN 13463-1:2009, and EN 13463-5:2011. Rosta recommended it as a perfect solution for improving environmental safety.

CMC Texpan installed the ATEX motor base and yielded many benefits – not just increased safety, but also higher productivity, lower costs, and higher sifter availability. The product has ensured that no spark can be generated between the screen frame and electric motor.

“This new ATEX certification is an important added value for us,” said CMC Texpan managing director Paolo Gattesco. “It allows the company to propose screens for applications and market with [a] high level of explosion-proof requirements.”
