The right way to remove a high strength threadlocker

High strength red threadlockers are considered a permanent solution to locking and sealing threaded fasteners. There are instances, however, where fastener removal is necessary. In these cases, red threadlocker removal is possible — and easy, in fact — if the right technique is employed.

Removal in minutes

“Removing a red threadlocker involves heating the nut and bolt for a couple of minutes to a temperature of 500 degrees F (250 degrees C),” explains Mike Wase, Loctite adhesive specialist for Henkel Canada.

Applying localized heat using a blowtorch, for example, softens the thermoset plastic in the threadlocker. Once the nut and bolt are heated up, disassembly can be completed using a standard hand wrench, Wase says.

This simple removal method makes the Loctite 2620 red threadlocker a top choice for plant maintenance applications that require high strength locking and sealing, but may also require occasional removal for maintenance.
