When friction occurs between moving metal parts, nicks, cracks, corrosion, stress and pits develop over time, resulting in the loss of a smooth metallic surface. Electroplating vs. surface engineering
There are two primary techniques used to restore metal parts. Electroplating involves plating the surface, and filling in the dips, cracks, nicks and holes with a thin coat of metal that is bonded to the authentic metal surface. This procedure is sufficient for a number of metal parts; however, it’s not as effective when the part has bumps or other surface protrusions. This is because the thin metal coating used coats the protrusion, which can make it bumpier than before it underwent the process. In addition, when the metal coating or the plating material is not as strong as the original metal, it does not effectively bond to the original metal surface, resulting in the new surface peeling or scratching off easily.
Surface engineering is another approach, and this one involves polishing or grinding the original surface until all nicks, bumps and pits have been eliminated, and the surface is once again shiny and smooth. This technique uses both chemical and mechanical metal polishing methods to generate a smooth surface on metal parts. Frequently, it can generate parts that exceed manufacturer’s specs.
Although both methods are commonly utilized to refurbish damaged or corroded metal parts, only surface engineering can enhance the efficiency of new (unused) metal parts.
