The leading cause of workplace injuries is overexertion as a result of lifting, pushing, pulling, holding, carrying or throwing objects. This is according to the Liberty Mutual Workplace Safety Index, a 2015 report released by Liberty Mutual that studied the leading causes of workplace injuries. Engineered Lifting Systems (ELS), a Canadian manufacturer of standard and custom overhead material lifting systems, offers an innovative handling solution designed to reduce such injuries — Destuff-IT end-of-conveyor lift assists.
The risk
Many organizations have employees, typically a team of three to five people, tasked to manually load or unload unpalletized product in or from containers and trailers. Because of the physical demands of manual loading and unloading, people who do this work are at high risk for musculoskeletal injuries, also known as repetitive motion injuries, repetitive strain injuries, cumulative trauma disorders, overuse syndrome and soft tissue disorders. These injuries are often caused by repeated bending, lifting, twisting, carrying, overhead reaching, awkward positioning, and climbing to reach high objects.
The solution
Destuff-IT is ELS’ solution to this common, and costly, problem. By positioning the worker correctly to the box wall, the Destuff-IT reduces the amount of overhead reaching required by a dock worker. It also minimizes the amount of lifting required, as the conveyed product is guided into place. Operators will experience less fatigue and muscle strain because they are able to find an optimal position with Destuff-IT. Workers simply stand on the operator platform to control, drive and steer the machine. This ability to be positioned near the product significantly reduces the risk of injury from repetitive lifting, twisting, carrying and overhead reaching.
