When Ontario Power Generation (OPG) needed to increase the storage capacity at its Whitby, Ont,-based warehouse, which services the nearby Pickering Nuclear Generating Station, the company sent out a request for quotation. OPG, owned by the Province of Ontario, was very specific in its needs. Beyond increasing the storage capacity in the facility, it required a vendor that could effectively minimize interference with its daily operations while also adhering to a demanding timeline.

Redirack Storage Systems was up to the challenge and was able to implement a racking system in a live warehouse, successfully managing the project to run on time and on budget.

A complex project

The expansion required the expertise of multiple representatives and project managers from both Redirack and OPG. The main challenge was safely and efficiently completing the project in a live facility, which could not be shut down, even temporarily. Precise planning was key.

The project began with a pre-job safety meeting with all stakeholders present. The main work area was made safe with barriers to prevent entry, and a walkway was redirected for OPG staff to safely travel through the warehouse. A comprehensive safety plan was implemented, and the installation team communicated daily with all stakeholders.

Managing the timeline was another challenge. Due to the scale of the storage expansion project, large amounts of materials needed to be delivered to the warehouse — 12 truckloads in total. Therefore, sequencing the flow of materials was key. To maintain the productivity and timeliness of the project, just enough materials had to be available on site for installation to begin and continue without any setbacks. A detailed timeline of installation events enabled OPG to continue its daily operations without congesting its facility, and resulted in the project being completed nearly a week ahead of schedule.

A state-of-the-art solution

Redirack installed a cantilever system, high bay shelving with multiple pick faces, and a high-level single selective racking solution with very narrow aisle operation to reduce working aisle widths in the warehouse. In addition to safely and efficiently storing items, Redirack’s solution improves the productivity of warehouse staff by increasing picking capacity.

The project was a success, satisfying all stakeholder groups.
