arc welders

Different styles of welding are suitable for BBQ smokers, depending on the circumstances.

One application for which Red-D-Arc Welderentals equipment is perfect is constructing barbecue smokers. Manufacturers need to join metal materials when making these smokers, and several methods are available – shielded metal arc welders, gas metal arc welders, and gas tungsten arc welders – for different conditions.

Red-D-Arc posted a recent blog entry that discusses different options for welding BBQ smokers and their respective advantages.

Three models of welders

Also known as stick welders, shielded metal arc welders are a simple, effective way to weld together components, according to Red-D-Arc. These devices do not require shielding gas, advanced electrical waveforms, or wire-feeding systems, making them robust and portable systems. They work well for multiple projects, and operators can use them to join dirtier material because of the flux coating on the electrodes. On the other hand, stick welders may be troublesome for materials less than 1½ millimetres thick, and they are not ideal if weld splatter is an issue.

Gas metal arc welders also use electrodes for weld filler metal, but they require wire-feeding systems and shielding gas. They are highly appropriate for making large numbers of smokers in mass-production environments that rely on high productivity and are better suited than stick welders are to join materials other than carbon steel. On the downside, gas metal welding can be limited in the material thicknesses it can join together, and they can leave weld splatter.

Gas tungsten arc welders are the most complex of these three systems. Each needs manipulation of a torch with a non-consumable tungsten electrode and a shielding gas in one hand, with a filler metal rod in the other. The user can adjust the amperage on the fly, and the welders are light and transportable. A major advantage is their ability to join a wide range of materials, including aluminum, stainless steel, and nickel super-alloys, even they are very thin. In addition, they offer aesthetically pleasing results. Unfortunately, these welders are more expensive, work relatively slowly, and require high skill to operate.

However the individual application varies, Red-D-Arc has a welder to help with BBQ-smoker assembly.
