When companies begin to employ energy-efficient technologies, they often start with the low-hanging fruit — areas that allow them to realize results with little effort. Lighting is one of those areas.

LED lights, in particular, are recognized for having energy-saving benefits over traditional lighting technologies. Their benefits, however, go beyond electrical cost savings.

Matt Donelan, a market development director for Henkel North America, highlighted these additional benefits in a recent article. He says there are four main reasons to consider going green with LED.

1. They last longer

An LED can last more than 50,000 hours — 10 to 20 times as long as conventional lights, he says. A longer service life means fewer bulb changes, lower maintenance costs and significantly less environmental impact due to less need for packaging, transportation and raw material usage.

2. They lead to greater HVAC efficiency

LED lights can be up to 90 per cent efficient. Since less than 10 per cent of the electricity they use is converted to heat, they won’t raise the temperature in a building. This results in a reduced load on the facility’s air conditioning, which can lower the A/C bill by as much as 30 per cent, Donelan explains.

3. They are recyclable

LED lights contain no harmful elements like mercury or lead, which means a reduced environmental impact and no special disposal requirements.

4. They lead to less light pollution

Since LED assembly can produce lighting that is more directionally controllable, light is not wasted where it’s not needed, and there is less night-time “light pollution” that can impact animals, such as sea turtles and night-migrating birds.

In addition to these four benefits, Donelan says LED lights become even more environmentally friendly when they can be manufactured with environmentally responsible materials like adhesives and sealants — products available through Henkel. These allow for lighter, more unitized designs, and support long product life through improved resistance to water, wind, airborne particles and vibration, while also improving thermal and mechanical stress management.

Henkel is committed to sustainability in the adhesives, sealants and coatings industry. For more information about its adhesive and sealing products, or to learn more about its Environmental Sustainability Program, contact Henkel.
