Denso North America is a leader in corrosion protection and sealing technology, offering a wide array of products for infrastructure and more. This includes a variety of liquid pipeline coatings, including Protal 7200. This is a fast-cure, high-build pipeline coating that Denso has specially formulated to complement FBE-coated pipe.

A 100 per cent solids, two-part epoxy coating, Protal 7200 can be easily applied by hand, spray, or machine in one coat, either in the field or at a shop.

Various uses and applications

Protal 7200 pipeline coating is suitable for various applications, including onsite protection of girth welds, tie-ins, welds for boring applications, FBE repairs, push-rack applications, station piping, fittings, and fabrication. Workers also choose it for mainline coating, sacrificial coating for direction drill and road bore pipe, and rehabilitation of existing pipelines.

A prime advantage of using Protal 7200 is that is cures extremely quickly, to enable fast handling and backfill times. Other notable features of this Denso product:

  • Fast touch-dry and set times;
  • Resistance of temperatures of up to 95 degrees Celsius;
  • High build, of up to 70 mils / 1,778 microns in one coat;
  • High adhesion;
  • High abrasion resistance;
  • Environmentally responsible;
  • Variety of packaging options;
  • Outstanding self-leveling characteristics; and
  • Compliance with AWWA C-210-92 and CSA Z 245.30.

The mixed material should be applied to the surface and brush to the required mil thickness. Surfaces below ten degrees Celsius should be preheated for a quicker cure.

With spray application, Denso recommends using an XP70 Plural Component Sprayer, which is designed to mix and atomize 100 per cent solids epoxies. Workers should use a wet-on-wet spray technique to reach a thickness of at least 508 microns, measuring the coating thickness with a wet-film thickness gauge. Denso representatives must train relevant workers before application to ensure correct use.
