Protal 7125 coating from Denso is perfect for low temperatures

This includes Protal 7125, a fast-cure coating that is specifically built for low-temperature applications – making it ideal for wintertime pipeline projects.

One coat for fast work

Protal 7125 is useful primarily as a rehabilitation coating for already existing and operating low-temperature pipelines. Other relevant applications include station piping, girth welds, tie-ins, push racks and other laybarge applications, as well as repairs for FBE fittings and fabrications. Denso also recommends using it in new construction projects in colder temperatures if preheating or post-heating is neither practical nor feasible.

This coating has been formulated for applications to colder substrates at lower ambient temperatures; its quick-curing action enables fast handling and back-filling in temperatures as low as -20 degrees Celsius, and it does not freeze during application to substrates below zero Celsius. As a high-build liquid coating, it is simply applied by brush in one coat to many parts of pipelines, either operational or under construction.

To apply Protal 7125, the user begins by grit-blasting the surfaces to a near-white finish, then slowly mixing the coating hardener to the base with a stir stick or power mixer until it is light grey with no streaks, making sure to scrape out the inside of the container. The mixed material is then poured onto the pipeline surface and brushed, trowelled, or rolled to the desired thickness, ideally a minimum of 20 mils, measured by a wet-film thickness gauge. Back-filling times depend on the temperature; cooler temperatures will extend the time periods.

Other considerable benefits of using Protal 7125 include the following:

• A build of up to 50 mils in one coat;
• Will cure during submersion in water post-application;
