Thermo-Kinetics manufactures a range of protection tubes for sensors. These tubes are typically used to protect thermocouples from mechanical damage and contaminating atmospheres. They are available in a variety of materials to suit the environment, including ceramic, silicon carbide and more.

Ceramic tubes

Ceramic protection tubes are available, including alumina and mullite varieties. They are typically used with platinum-type thermocouples in applications with high temperatures. These tubes are dense, fine grained and non-porous. They will remain gas tight even at temperatures approaching their melting point.

Alumina tubes offer exceptional strength and thermal shock characteristics. In addition, they are chemical resistant. They are suitable for long-term use in reducing or oxidizing atmospheres and temperatures above 1200 degrees C (2200 degrees F).

Mullite tubes offer a lower cost option with good strength, thermal shock resistance and chemical resistance. They are suitable for short-term use in oxidizing atmospheres or applications where mechanical failure is likely.

Metal-ceramic tubes are made from a combination of chromium and alumina to provide excellent resistance to oxidation and comparable thermal conductivity to stainless steel. They can be used at temperatures up to 1370 degrees C (2500 degrees F).

Silicon carbide tubes

Silicon carbide (SiC) tubes feature resistance to flame and gases. They have high thermal conductivity, excellent thermal shock resistance, and good resistance to most corrosives, including molten aluminum. These tubes are usable at temperatures up to 1650 degrees C (3000 degrees F).

Hexology protection tubes are constructed from sintered alpha (SA) silicon carbide. They offer high strength, excellent resistance to abrasion and corrosion, and impermeability to gases at pressures up to 4500 psig. These tubes also offer excellent thermal conductivity for high thermal transfer and rapid response times. They can be used in working temperatures up to 1650 degrees C (3000 degrees F).

Lava-coated protection tubes are made from silicon carbide/graphite that is isostatically formed around threaded pipe. They offer excellent thermal conductivity to provide fast response to temperature changes. They are designed for monitoring the holding and melting temperatures for nonferrous alloys up to 1250 degrees C (2280 degrees F).
