Bergen Cable carries pre-formed wire rope.

Bergen Cable has satisfied customers with an unmatched selection of cable and wire rope for more than 80 years. One alternative solution available from the company is pre-formed wire rope, distinguished by the way its individual wires and strands are pre-formed into a specific shape before final assembly.

As a customized product that can be adjusted to specific client needs, pre-formed wire rope comes with its own unique user advantages.

Higher resistance to bending fatigue

Some people refer to the terms “cable” and “wire rope” as if they were synonymous, but wire rope specifically means rope that has a diameter higher than 3/8 of an inch, while ropes with smaller diameters are known as cords or cables. The process of manufacturing pre-formed wire rope eliminates the tendency for wires and strands to straighten by keeping them in the proper positions. The Bergen team cites five major benefits of investing in pre-formed wire rope:

  1. Pre-formed wire rope can be cut without the seizing that is necessary to maintain the structure of standard wire rope.
  2. The broken rope ends stay twisted, as opposed to the untwisting of the ends of standard wire rope, and this increases the salvation value of broken rope.
  3. This kind of wire rope is substantially free of liveliness and twisting tendencies, which makes installation and handling easier while reducing the risk of damage to the rope from kinking or fouling. Pre-forming enables more general use of long lay and wire core constructions.
  4. Removing internal stress increases resistance to bending fatigue, and this expands service in tasks that require the ability to withstand bending. This also enables the use of rope with bigger outer wires when users need more wear resistance.
  5. Outer wires wear thinner before breakage, while broken wire ends do not protrude from rope to injure workers, nick and distort adjacent wires, or wear sheaves and drums. Since broken ends do not porcupine, they are not as conspicuous as those on standard wire rope. More care is needed during inspection of worn rope, to determine its condition.
