SCR controls

Process heaters offers a full range of industrial SCR-based controls.

Process Heaters supplies far more than just heaters for industrial clients. As Toronto’s top one-stop shop for heating-related products, the company also carries furnaces, control panels, thermostats, temperature sensors, pressure transducers, and more. This considerable list also encompasses a selection of power controls – including seven different types of SCR controls.

Employers can turn to Process Heaters for a suitable power-control solution, whether that is an SCR-based control or an MDR relay.

Proportional control of electrical power

An MDR relay is a mercury-filled relay for controlling electrical power. This relay provides a very long operational life with no discernible contact wear. SCR controls, also known as silicon controlled rectifiers, are solid-state switching devices that provide quick, variable, proportional control of electrical power; in a heating context, this gives users optimum control of the heating, and it also enables them to prolong heater life many times over standard control methods.

Process Heaters supplies the following variations of SCR controls:

  • Heat sinks and thermstrates: heat-dissipating components for solid-state relays;
  • Phase angle fire: analog SCR controllers with single-phase power and sine-wave modification for loads with power-factor considerations. Accept voltage and potentiometer commands;
  • Single-phase burst fire: analog SCR controllers with distributed power control for single-phase supplies. Accept most commands;
  • Solid state relays: simple power controls with extremely long lifespans;
  • Three-leg phase angle fire: three-phase SCR controllers capable of full-fledged phase angle firing for inductive, capacitive, or T3 loads running on three-phase power. Include current limiting, over-current trip, and shorted SCR detection;
  • Two-leg, three-phase burst fire: accurate yet inexpensive analog SCR controllers for three-phase resistive loads. No control transformers necessary, as power comes from the 4/20mA loop; and
  • Two-leg, three-phase zero cross fire: highly accurate power controls designed for three-phase resistive loads.
