Wiegand sensors

The special Wiegand wire – the core element of any energy harvesting Wiegand Sensor – is produced at POSITAL locations in the U.S. and Europe, ensuring a stable, reliable supply chain.

POSITAL’s line of Wiegand sensors is about to get bigger. The company has recently expanded its manufacturing facilities to enable it to ramp up production of these items. This major expansion will allow POSITAL to produce as many as one million Wiegand sensors per year, with enough material available to create them for the next decade.

These energy-harvesting sensors generate small levels of electrical energy from rotary motion to energize counter circuits and other low-power electronic devices. POSITAL has sold more than 500,000 of these devices – about four-fifths of them for motor feedback.

The world’s top source

POSITAL has served as the world’s top source of Wiegand wire and related items for more than four years. The company uses Wiegand-powered rotation counter systems in its IXARC multi-turn rotary encoders, while providing these sensors to other manufacturers to use in electronic counter systems for harvesting energy. Durable and reliable, Wiegand sensors enable these counters to record all shaft rotations with no external power sources or high-maintenance battery systems required. These devices also provide higher tolerance to shock, vibration, dust, and moisture than other systems based on optical or mechanical measurement techniques when applied to multi-turn rotational sensors in motor feedback systems.

Wiegand-sensor technology has evolved dramatically in performance and quality over the past 40 years, to the point where these devices are commonly used in key cards, tokens, pulse generators, and servo motors. Scientists and engineers are constantly seeking new ways to allow standalone devices to harvest small energy amounts from surrounding environments to power isolated electronic circuits. By doing away with external power sources and batteries, these sensors become self-sufficient, reliable, and lower-maintenance.

With this substantial facility upgrade, POSITAL ensures that Wiegand technology will continue to have a solid future. Customers can feel assured that these sensors will be in abundance for years to come.
