A manufacturer of wood office furniture and custom architectural woodwork was concerned that its inefficient work processes carried the risk of worker injury and product damage. It turned to Engineered Lifting Systems & Equipment (ELS) for a better solution.

The challenge

The company’s work process required that workers manually handle various sizes of glass sheets, moving them from a vertical position on a shipping skid to a horizontal position for an assembly process. The company was worried about worker safety because of the manual lifting. In addition, there was also concern over the risk of the glass breaking because workers were manually handling it.

The solution

The company first selected a powered vacuum lifter/tilter, but it quickly proved to be inadequate and unreliable. Then, the manufacturer turned to ELS for its pneumatic lift assist with powered tilter.

The lift assist is mounted on a pneumatic balancer suspended from a free-standing Gorbel workstation bridge crane, which provides the vertical lift and tilt for the glass panels. This design covers the full range of the work area. Workers use handlebars to control movement of the glass lift assist with ease. The handlebar controls include air balancer up/down (vertical lifting force), the vacuum pads (attach and release of glass panels) and tilter operations (180-degree tilt from horizontal to vertical or vice versa).

The results

Following the installation, the plant has experienced reduced worker injuries, in addition to increased efficiencies and savings.
