central dust collection system

N.R. Murphy served Wyeth with a central air-quality system in the 1980s.

What has kept N.R. Murphy Limited successful for decades is a long line of success stories. This company has a history of satisfying customers with air-quality solutions that make work environments healthier, and happy customers lead to more business and a strong reputation. N.R. Murphy is still proud of the time it found the perfect solution for Wyeth Limited: a central dust collection system that solved many issues.

Replacing numerous inadequate systems

In 1987, Wyeth, a pharmaceutical manufacturer in Windsor, ON, was seeking an upgrade to its current dust-collection systems, which were inadequate. The company needed a new solution that was large enough to accommodate its new expansion and maintain a healthy working environment that would meet the approval of its own engineers and the Ontario Ministry of Labour.

Wyeth turned to N.R. Murphy, which entered into a contract to supply and install a complete central dust collection system. This system would include a continuous cleaning pulse-jet cartridge filter unit, plus an air-dust inlet for efficient diffusion and a blowback safety damper. The solution also included an acoustically lined clean-air plenum to attenuate fan inlet noise, and the quick-opening access doors on the filter section enabled easy servicing.

N.R. Murphy chose a 23-inch Type EA-1 extra-heavy-duty exhauster for the fan package, with a 100-horsepower T.E.F.C. motor with strong isolators for vibration prevention. The exhauster also had an inline discharge silencer for noise reduction. For drum storage, the system had three hoppers with airtight drum connector and proximity-level detectors.

Other features included 12 aeropleat filters and 12 microtrain HEPA filters downstream of the main filter unit and fan assembly, to serve as a secondary precaution to stop dust from escaping, in compliance with emission standards. N.R. Murphy also incorporated a main control panel with an adjustable seven-day clock, a 100-horsepower motor starter, and photohelic switches for the dust collector and safety filters into the system.

After installation, N.R. Murphy conducted air balancing of all branch lines. Wyeth was ready to use a fully functioning central dust collection system with satisfactory air performance at dust-pickup locations.
