The LDS V406 permanent magnet shaker

Brüel & Kjær manufactures many world-class measurement tools that are available in Canada via Durham Instruments – such as the LDS V406 permanent magnet shaker. This product is a common choice for general vibration tests and in universities and research facilities, and it also works in a wide range of industrial applications.

The LDS V406 is recommended for such scenarios as fatigue and resonance testing of small electronics and the study of biomedical devices and material.

Designed for maximum performance

This shaker also works as a non-seismic pickup, velocity transducer, or high-speed actuator. The LDS V406 is a versatile and reliable unit designed for maximum performance, and Durham Instruments recommends it for use in many different industries – like general manufacturing, aerospace, automation, food processing, forestry, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, and transportation.

This permanent magnet shaker has a usable frequency range going from five to 9,000 hertz. When supplied as standard, the unit offers a nominal peak sine rating of 98 newtons. The LDS V406 can produce a sine vector force of 196 newtons if paired with the recommended LDS PA500Lamplifier and cools with an external fan. With an armature diameter of 38 millimetres, this shaker incorporates a robust yet lightweight moving armature with adequate support for test loads, without undermining force capability. Two laminated-fibre flexures are bonded to the device to afford the armature with axial support and enhance lateral and rotational restraints.

The device is usually base-mounted, but trunnion mounting is available. The user can add an auxiliary suspension unit for vibration screening on large, spring-mounted structures. This allows the shaker to hand vertically from the device under test, boosting payload capacity. The auxiliary suspension enables obverse movement, unlike with normal operation.

Other common uses for this magnet shaker:

  • accelerometer calibration
  • fatigue and resonance testing
  • machinery condition monitoring and vibration measurement
  • modal and structural analyses, including civil engineering applications like bridge testing
  • laboratory experiments, including powder separation or compacting
  • testing of medical devices and material
  • vibration screening of small components and testing of electronic assemblies
