A South Dakota plant switched to the Verderflex Dura 35 pump model.

Verder fluid-handling products are available in Canada through York Fluid Controls Ltd. Among the manufacturer’s success stories is the case of a water-purification plant serving Sioux Falls, SD, which needed to move lime slurry. The facility had always depended on gravity to feed slaked lime slurry into softening basins.

By recommending the Verderflex Dura 35 model of peristaltic pumps for the task, Verder saved plenty of money and downtime for the plant.

Accurate, repeatable dosing pumps

A dense product with solids content of up to 35 per cent, lime slurry has an abrasive nature that causes wear on progressive cavity pumps. So the Sioux Falls Water Purification Plant wanted peristaltic pumps, also known as hose pumps, to transfer the slurry. These pumps use alternating compression and relaxation of reinforced hoses to push fluids through pipework; the repeated cycle causes a vacuum that draws more product into the hose.

Hose pumps are accurate, repeatable dosing pumps in which product is contained completely within each hose, so no moving parts can clog or corrode. Therefore, a peristaltic pump is the ideal option for pumping lime and other high-solid-content slurries. The main obstacle that the plant faced when selecting the appropriate model was the amount of space available: it wanted to pump 2,350 litres per hour constantly, which would typically necessitate a large pump with a sizable motor and gearbox.

The Dura 35 is a unique design of peristaltic pump with a space-saving design, vertical motor, and gearbox that significantly lower the pump’s footprint. Available from York Fluid Controls, this compact pump can move liquids at up to 5½ cubic metres an hour at pressures as high as 12 Bar – which was perfect for the facility, as it needed to pump the slurry 24-7. Other advantages included fast and easy maintenance, with simple hose changes that occur after long periods of use.

The plant installed the Dura 35, which ran for more than 8,000 hours with no issues, and it was so effective that the plant went ahead and installed additional units. Another triumph for Verder.
