The Shimana SHGLTM127 Paint Thickness Tester provides non-destructive measurements of non-magnetic layers on both ferrous and nonferrous metals in automotive applications. Available from Digital Measurement Metrology, the digital tester has many best-in-class features that make it ideal for use by painters, inspectors, body shops, appraisers or detailers in both laboratories and harsh field conditions.

Tester features and applications

The new Shimana SHGLTM127 has an F probe that measures the thickness of non-magnetic materials, such as paint, plastic, copper, zinc, aluminium and chrome, on magnetic materials like iron and nickel, for example. This probe is often used to measure the thickness of galvanizing, lacquer, porcelain enamel and phosphide layers, as well as copper, aluminium and some alloy tile and paper. The tester’s N probes, on the other hand, are used to measure the thickness of non-magnetic coatings on non-magnetic metals.

The digital tester provides automatic substrate recognition, and doesn’t require any adjustment after a measurement is taken. Simply place the probe on the calibration substrates and reset the measurement to zero. Then, using the calibration foils, the user can easily verify and adjust the meter to ensure accuracy. The device’s digital display gives the exact reading — no guessing is required.

Model SHGLTM127 offers two measurement modes — single and continuous — and allows for manual or automatic shut down, as well as metric/english conversion. It meets the standards of both ISO 2178 and ISO 2360, as well as DIN, ASTM and BS.

The tester is available with an optional cable and software that allows it to interface with a computer. Using this feature, the tester can communicate statistics for data analysis on a PC, or print reports.

Additional details

This gauge has passed all of the necessary quality control checks; however, if a calibration certificate is required by your quality control system, Digital Measurement Metrology can help. The Brampton, Ont.-based company has an in-house calibration lab, and can offer an ISO, NIST traceable calibration certificate upon request.
