There are many benefits to using optical strain gauges when the application calls for efficient and reliable measurement. These sensors — optical fibres used for transmitting measurement data — are superior to their electrical equivalents when used in certain applications.

Advantages over electrical strain gauges

Optical strain gauges offer many advantages in aerospace, automotive, geotechnology, pipeline monitoring, railway and wind power applications (and more), particularly over their electrical equivalents. They offer efficient and reliable measurement of high strain values, with good resistance to alternating loads, even in potentially explosive environments. In addition, they have immunity against electromagnetic fields and the effects of humid environments, and are faster and more cost-efficient to install. Another bonus: multiple sensors are incorporated in a single measuring chain, and they have multiplexing capability.

Optical strain gauges in Canada

Durham Instruments can supply optical strain gauges to its customers in Canada. The Pickering, Ont.-based distributor carries OptiMet systems from HBM. These gauges feature fibre-optic components with and without an integrated Bragg grating measurement function. The models available include:

  • HBM FiberSensing OptiMet-OMF (optical fibre with Bragg gratings): Ideal for use in laboratory applications, OptiMet-OMF is a single-mode optical fibre. By default, it has 13 fibre Bragg gratings and allows fibre-optic strain measurement with a defined gauge factor. Bending radii up to 2.5 millimetres are possible.
  • HBM FiberSensing OptiMet-PKF (optical fibre with Bragg gratings and rugged coating): Ideally suited for outdoor use, OptiMet-PKF designates a single-mode optical fibre with an additional rugged coating. The standard optical fibre has 13 fibre Bragg gratings and allows fibre-optic strain measurement with a defined gauge factor. Bending radii up to 10 millimetres are possible.
