There are many benefits to using optical strain gauges when the application calls for efficient and reliable measurement. These sensors — optical fibres used for transmitting measurement data — are superior to their electrical equivalents when used in certain applications.
Advantages over electrical strain gauges
Optical strain gauges offer many advantages in aerospace, automotive, geotechnology, pipeline monitoring, railway and wind power applications (and more), particularly over their electrical equivalents. They offer efficient and reliable measurement of high strain values, with good resistance to alternating loads, even in potentially explosive environments. In addition, they have immunity against electromagnetic fields and the effects of humid environments, and are faster and more cost-efficient to install. Another bonus: multiple sensors are incorporated in a single measuring chain, and they have multiplexing capability.
