Workers fix a rebar cage to a damaged pile under the Holland River Bridge in 2013.

One of the best reasons to trust Denso North America’s anti-corrosion solutions is that they last for a long time. Infrastructure and pipelines all over Canada continue to benefit from world-class protection many years after Denso products were applied. One key example is the Holland River Bridge, about 60 kilometres north of Toronto. SeaShield pile protection from Denso continues to hold up well on this bridge nearly six years following application.

Survived tremendous snow and ice

The Holland River Bridge is located on Yonge Street and runs over the Holland River, the watershed river that drains about 600 square kilometres into the southernmost extremity of Lake Simcoe. In 2013, Denso was awarded a SeaShield project that involved restoring several timber piles located in this ecologically sensitive river. This pile protection was one part of an overall restoration project that also included concrete restoration, expansion-joint repairs, and repaving of the bridge deck.

For this task, the Denso team elected to use Sub Sea Splash Zone Coating, part of its SeaShield Series 500 group. Workers brought these products with them by boat and barge out onto the river and affixed them to specifically identified damaged piles – one of which was so badly crushed that affixing the rebar cage and jacket around it seemed like it would be impossible. Fortunately, the crew was able to secure the rebar cage to the pile and pump it full of SeaShield 550 Epoxy Grout.

The project was finished in the late autumn of 2013. Not long afterwards, Ontario experienced one of its worst winters in many years. But Denso’s solution for pile protection withstood all of the tremendous snow and ice without even a hint of damage. This was confirmed in the spring, when workers inspected the piles and found them perfectly protected.

And this solution is still working in 2019. The piles on the Holland River Bridge remain secure and protected after almost six years, thanks to Denso. With the SeaShield series, piles and more can last for generations, accommodating all kinds of vehicle and pedestrian traffic safely and strongly.
