N.R. Murphy had a perfect solution for Mohawk College.

N.R. Murphy Limited has earned a reputation for quality dust collectors with decades of success stories. Businesses know this team can provide the best solutions to improve air quality, with its standard and custom-built products. A key example occurred 15 years ago, when a college in the Niagara Region needed a dust-collection upgrade.

“A job very well done, on time and on budget”

In 2004, Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology was using an FBP-15 dust collector in the cabinet-making shop at its Stoney Creek, Ont. campus. The institution had purchased the system from N.R. Murphy in 1969. The FBP-15 had been perfect for the campus’ old location on Wentworth Street, but since the college’s 1995 relocation to a larger facility on Barton Street, the collector had proved insufficient.

Knowing N.R. Murphy as a supplier of quality dust collectors, faculty coordinator Ken Mercer contacted the company and asked for an evaluation of the current system. An N.R. Murphy technical-sales representative and an inside technical/engineering-support person collaborated to develop the parameters for an upgrade. The proposed solution was a system that could reach 28,105 cubic feet per minute and collect all dust from the building’s shop equipment at once.

The new system included an FBP-38 Arrangement “A”, a cylindrical, shaker-style device that collected waste material in a hopper and emptied it through discharge doors. The FBP-38 was about four metres wide and more than 15 metres tall, with explosion venting, a spark-detection and -suppression system, and indicators to monitor the amount of waste collected.

After N.R. Murphy won the contract, its personnel quickly installed the new system, in time for the autumn semester. Mercer was so impressed with the new system that he sent an e-mail to the supplier. “Thanks for a job very well done, on time and on budget,” he wrote. “The system is everything you said it would be in every way… fantastic.” Mercer went on to praise the crew’s “tidy and professional job installing the system.”

This is just one of many examples of how N.R. Murphy has pleased customers with its quality dust collectors.
