Denso products are providing protection in the redevelopment of Hamilton Harbour.

Denso North America manufactures and supplies many great anti-corrosion and sealing products for infrastructure applications – especially its petrolatum tape solutions. For many years, the company has built on a long track record of helping municipal governments in Canada protect their remediation and redevelopment projects against corrosion and other forms of damage.

For example, the City of Hamilton, Ont. is currently putting its trust in Denso’s petrolatum tape solutions while undergoing a major redevelopment in Hamilton Harbour.

Creating a long-lasting seal

Scheduled for completion sometime next year, this project involves an environmental remediation and redevelopment of a section of the Harbour, on the edge of Lake Ontario. Two new piers have been designed for construction; the structures will be secured in place by thick sheet piling with two-inch tie rods and wale bolts. The City was rightly concerned about many potential threats to the piers’ integrity, such as corrosion, weather-related expansion and contraction, and leaks through the tie rod holes.

The City needed a remedy for uncontrolled water leaks during construction of the piers. For the best solution, the crew turned to Denso petrolatum tape solutions, which included Denso Hi-Tack Primer, Hi-Tack Tape, and Densyl Mastic.

After the failed caulking and foam were removed, workers filled the cavities with Densyl Mastic. This putty-like material was the ideal choice for the application, with its density and sealing ability over a wide spectrum of temperature fluctuations; it can also be contoured to fill irregular spaces and cover sharp edges. Hi-Tack Primer was then applied to the rods and the sheet piles’ vertical surfaces. Workers then applied Denso Hi-Tack Tape, covering the entire vertical surface around the interface, with a 50 per cent overlap going from horizontal coverage of the tie rods. Along with the Hi-Tack Primer, Hi-Tack Tape enables long-term adhesion in challenging environments.

After the Hamilton Harbour redevelopment project reaches its estimated completion in 2019, the City need not worry about water egress and corrosion for more than half a century – thanks to Denso. This solution will protect the new piers well beyond their life expectancy.
