Ontario bridge gets superior pile rehabilitation from Denso SeaShield system

Piles on a bridge received new protection from the Denso SeaShield solution.

Denso North America has satisfied customers for decades with its infrastructure protection products. Last year, a company called Dominion Divers was hired to help repair a concrete bridge over the Black Sturgeon River, about 19 kilometres north of Kenora, Ont. Here is how Denso worked with Dominion to offer the perfect solution for the bridge – specifically, the SeaShield Series 2000HD system, combined with low-temperature petrolatum tape and glass outerwrap.

Cost-efficient, long-term protection system

Owned by the provincial Ministry of Transportation, this bridge is supported by five bents, each one consisting of four spirally welded steel piles, 600 millimetres in diameter. The piles are connected by structural cross-bracing that is permanently submerged underwater. Built in the 1960s, the bridge needed repair; the original corrosion-protection coating on the piles had degraded, and the piles themselves were suffering minor corrosion.

Dominion partnered with contractor Landform Civil to undertake these repairs. To mitigate corrosion for years, the SeaShield system was chosen, with the tape and outerwrap at the submerged cross-connections. The 2000HD system includes Denso S105 paste, marine piling tape, and a two-millimetre-thick HDPE outer jacket, to give the piles a cost-efficient, long-term protection system.

During the shop drawing and pre-procurement stage, Dominion worked with Denso to ensure the engineer’s approval and appropriate HDPE outer-jacket lengths to minimize cutting in the field. Denso provided virtual training to Dominion to give them a basic understanding of how to apply the system before they arrived at the bridge – and also met with the customer on the site for technical support and guidance during the initial installation. A live video feed helped the Denso team offer instant guidance and feedback on the job. Most of this work was conducted underwater, as the bottom 2/3 of the piles were submerged.

After Dominion finished the installation of the SeaShield 2000HD pile protection system on all 25 piles and cross-connections, all on schedule, the contractor and engineer were impressed with the ease of application, the final result, and the support Denso offered. And Denso proudly added another happy customer to its success history.
