vertical broaching machines

Ohio Broach's dual-ram vertical broaching machines take up minimal floor space.

The Ohio Broach and Machine Company uses its six decades and more of industrial broaching experience to build its own in-house broaching machines – which the company uses for client projects and sells to customers who want to do their own broaching tasks. One key example is the firm’s series of dual-ram vertical broaching machines.

These vertical broaching machines have a compact, versatile design that enables them to take up minimal floor space in manufacturing plants, which saves costs in the long term.

Hardened and ground steel ways

Ohio Broach’s dual-ram vertical broaching machines have capacities ranging from five to 15 tons and strokes from 48 to 72 inches. For long service life and durability, they also have hardened and ground steel ways that have been built out of high carbon steel, which is hardened and tempered before being ground to closely controlled tolerances.

Other notable features include precise ram slides, constructed from close-grain, high-tensile cast iron. The slide surfaces have been scraped by hand for precise fits and flaked for maximum lubrication penetration. Each of the heavy-duty models has a pressurized, individual-point lubrication system that indicates low reservoir levels, plus anti-start interlocking and high-pressure indication for identifying impaired normal flow condition.

In addition, a high-performance, fixed-displacement vane pump has been incorporated into each unit in conjunction with other high-performance valves and controls; this creates a reliable open-loop drive-system design. The compact design includes a ram slide and table sub-assemblies mounted on a rigid base weldmat, with the lower portion acting as a coolant reservoir.

Although the standard model has a platen, non-moving table, Ohio Broach’s dual-ram vertical machines can come in different table types. Examples available include a tip-back table that tilts the work-holding fixture back 35 degrees from the horizontal, and an infeed shuttle table that moves on a horizontal plane, enabling the machine to make repeat passes until it reaches a predetermined cut depth. Customers may even request a combination of both optional table types, offering a more versatile design.

Standard colours for these machines are machine-tool grey and vista green.
