Ohio Broach has experience completing a diverse range of projects. From CNC shaping of electrical components to broaching used in AR-15 rifles for the military, the company has the experience to meet any specialized requirements.

Broaching lower receivers for AR-15 rifles

The company has helped many different manufacturers with broaching AR-15 lower receivers to meet military standards. The experience allowed it to find the optimum method for producing these parts to tight tolerances: a two pass broaching arrangement. The process begins with a simple starting hole to allow the first pass broach tool to start. To prevent distortion during the cut, the fixture holds the part in place and fixture supports provide backup. Guided broach tools are used to cut the sides, top, bottom and corners of a milled slot to the finish form. Ohio Broach uses one of its HF1572 horizontal broach machines for the operation. It offers 15 tons of cutting force and 72 inches of cutting stroke.

CNC shaping of electronic components

The company also has experience with CNC shaping. For instance, Ohio Broach has produced various electrical connector sleeves using its CNC shaper machines. These parts required the shaping of a range of different slots and forms on each part. The slots also varied in position and width. The company was able to broach these parts on a single spindle shaper. The typical part had five slots and was completed in about 45 to 50 seconds.

Redesign tooling process for wrench jaws

Another project Ohio Broach completed was to improve on a customer’s existing tooling process for ready-to-assemble broached wrench jaws. The customer’s existing process was under-performing. It involved multiple passes and caused problems with tooling breakage. The expert design engineers at Ohio Broach redesigned the slot tools to enable the parts to be broached in a single pass. This broaching operation was performed on a 15-ton, 90-inch stroke machine.
