Ohio Broach solves customer’s tooling breakage problem for wrench jaw manufacturing

One example is a customer that required a better way to manufacture ready-to-assemble wrench jaws.  

The challenge

A customer came to The Ohio Broach & Machine Company because its existing tooling process was under-performing. The customer had been using a small broaching machine with approximately 24 inches of stroke. The deep slot in the wrench jaw was broached in multiple passes, which resulted in problems with tooling breakage and difficulty keeping up with demand. 

To solve this problem, design engineers at Ohio Broach created tools that could broach the slot in a single pass. 

Wrench jaw broaching process 

The process was performed on a 15-ton, 90-inch stroke broaching machine. The wrench jaw’s deep slot, rounded slot and serrated tooth form were all broached on the same machine in progressive operations. The machine fixture was configured as three stations, and an operator transferred parts between them. This process is highly efficient, as a completely broached part is removed from the fixture at every stroke of the machine. Then the part is loaded into an automated drilling station. Lastly, the wrench jaw is deburred, heat treated, black oxidized and shipped to the customer.
