broaching solutions

Ohio Broach helped a company improve its tooling process for wrench jaws.

All kinds of manufacturing companies turn to The Ohio Broach & Machine Company for top broaching solutions, particularly when their current equipment is not providing the results they require. As Ohio Broach’s staff are experts in every stage of the broaching process – including design, manufacturing, production, and sharpening – they always have the right answers.

This was the case a few years ago, when a manufacturer of ready-to-assemble wrench jaws needed better broaching solutions. Ohio Broach’s unique skills came in handy once again.

A better stroke machine

The manufacturer’s issue was a tooling process that was insufficient. It was tooling its wrench jaws on a small machine that had only about 24 inches of stroke, and it was taking multiple passes to broach the deep slot in each part; this was causing tooling breakage, which slowed down production significantly.

Enter Ohio Broach. This company’s engineers went straight to work on redesigning the slot tools to broach each deep slot in a single pass. The process was now done on a 15-ton machine with 90 inches of stroke. With this new process, workers could additionally broach each rounded slot and serrated tooth form in progressive operations on the same machine.

Ohio Broach also increased the productivity and efficiency of the operation by recommending a three-step process of broaching, drilling, and finishing, allowing the transfer of materials between steps quickly and easily. After each stroke of the broaching machine, the operator removed a fully broached part from the fixture and then turned around to place it in a drilling machine to drill each hole to tolerance, while the next part was already being broached. The drilling machine would hydraulically clamp the fixture and cycle automatically upon the press of a few buttons. Then the part would be finished in the third step with deburring, heat treatment, and black oxidization.

With Ohio Broach’s help, this customer found a new operation method that not only eliminated unnecessary repeat work and breakdowns, but also made the work faster and easier. Ohio Broach specializes in broaching solutions like this.
