broaching success

Ohio Broach was found in 1956.

Since 1956, The Ohio Broach & Machine Company has been going above and beyond customer demands. That means this year is the company’s 65th anniversary – a rare milestone for a broaching provider. This longtime broaching success results from unique levels of experience, industry knowledge, and a knack for offering appropriate solutions.

These characteristics have helped Ohio Broach grow significantly since its humble beginnings in a four-car garage in Cleveland.

Increasing scope of broaching services

Launched by entrepreneur Charles “Bud” Van De Motter, this new company specialized in designing, manufacturing, and sharpening broaching tools for local customers. Soon, demand rose for broaching-equipment rebuilding and contract production broaching, so he had to expand the practice. In the early 1960s, Van De Motter moved the firm from his father’s garage to a larger facility, to accommodate a rising scope in machine repair and broaching services.

A new milestone in the company’s broaching success came in the late 1960s: Ohio Broach launched an exclusive line of broaching machines. This portfolio helped to raise the firm’s already burgeoning design, sharpening, and production services. By 1974, fast expansion made another big move necessary, bringing Ohio Broach to a 20,000-square-foot plant in Willoughby, OH. The company still operates out of this facility, the size of which is now more than 50,000 square feet.

The firm has continued to expand in other ways. Ohio Broach earned ISO certification in 1998 and later upgraded it to the ISO 9001:2008 standard. Employing about 35 workers in its plant, Ohio Broach offers broaching machines and services to clients around the globe, a customer base that reaches the United States, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Israel, the Philippines, South Korea, and China. This brings in more than $7 million in revenue annually.

Ohio Broach continues to serve as a major broaching success today – a long way from its modest origins in a small garage.
