The Ohio Broach & Machine Company is famous for its broaching machines.

The Ohio Broach & Machine Company observed its 60th anniversary last year – six decades of evolution from a small garage operation to an international provider of broaching machines and broach-tooling services. All of it has stemmed from the persistence of an entrepreneur named Charles P. Van De Motter.

In the beginning

The Ohio Broach story started in Cleveland in September 1956, when Van De Motter – nicknamed “Bud” by his friends – founded the company out of his father’s four-car garage. At first, Bud focused solely on designing, manufacturing, and sharpening broach tooling for local clients, but the practice soon expanded to rebuilding broaching equipment and contract production broaching.

As the company’s work broadened, Ohio Broach needed more space, and it settled in a bigger facility in Cleveland in the early 1960s. Later in the decade, the business founded its own exclusive line of broaching machines. As this product line took off, the company’s other services in design, sharpening, production, and manufacturing grew even more, which necessitated another big move – to a 20,000-square-feet space in Willoughby, OH in 1974.

Ohio Broach is still at that Willoughby facility, but it has not stopped growing. As the business has developed, the building space has increased to more than 50,000 square feet, currently occupied by around 35 employees. The company also became ISO-certified in 1998 and upgraded to ISO 9001:2008 certification in 2009. Ohio Broach has sold equipment to manufacturers in Mexico, Europe, Israel, the Philippines, South Korea, and China as well as in Canada and the United States, and today, its worldwide sales bring in more than $7 million per year in revenue.

Today, Ohio Broach provides a wealth of products and services, from broaching machines that can handle many different materials, to production broaching, broach-machine rebuilding, and broach-tool sharpening, reconditioning and repair. It has come a long way from Bud Van De Motter’s garage store.
