broaching provision

Broaching is a valued, important machining process that offers a unique precision and efficiency.

What is broaching? That is a question that requires a detailed answer in order to appreciate the wealth of services that The Ohio Broach & Machine Company offers to North American businesses. Broaching is a valued, important machining process that offers a unique precision and efficiency. Ohio Broach has been a leader in almost every kind of broaching provision a customer could want, for well more than 60 years.

Ideal for unusual metal shapes

For a lesson in Broaching 101: Broaching is a process of removing material from metal, typically less than Rc 30 in hardness, with a toothed tool called a broach. Not unlike a saw, this tool has teeth that increase in height over its length, which builds “feed” into the broach. Each different section works for a different broaching provision – like roughing, semi-finishing, or finishing – by varying the teeth’s height differences.

Frequently employed in precision machining, broaching is especially ideal for unusual metal shapes. Examples of broached surfaces include serrations, splines, keyways, and flat surfaces, and workpieces commonly processed include castings, forgings, screw-machine parts, and stampings.

Ohio Broach provides two main kinds of broaching: external and internal broaching. External broaching is the technique of running a broach linearly against the workpiece’s surface to effect a cut, typically in a vertical surface broaching machine. Internal broaching involves running the broach linearly through a pilot hole in the workpiece to effect a cut in a pull- or push-type broaching machine. Both methods require only one pass to make the cut, and both bring about results with higher precision and more quickly than most other machining processes do.

Not only does Ohio Broach offer virtually any specific broaching provision a customer may need; it also manufactures and sells broaching machines for private users to perform their own broaching work. But the company’s services do not stop there: it also offers sharpening, repair, and reconditioning services to keep tools and machines in peak condition. The Ohio Broach team can use its considerable talents to machine a broad array of parts and shapes through production broaching.
