Sortation solutions are available from Norpak.

Norpak Handling Ltd. is one of Canada’s premier suppliers of material-handling products, including various models of sortation conveyors. Sorting was once a rather labour-intensive manual process, with employees picking items out individually and distributing them into separate conveyor lines. But modern conveyor accessories and software enable automated sortation with higher precision and speed. Today, sorting is a major process in many manufacturing plants and warehouses, particularly in large-scale production, with sortation conveyors making the application far simpler.

Speed, floor space, product type

When a business is selecting a sortation solution for a warehouse or facility, it should take many different factors into consideration, since sorting conveyors are built for various scenarios. The Norpak team cites such important factors as the required speed, floor space, and the type of product being handled – including its weight, packaging type, and size. Among the more popular sortation conveyors available from the supplier:

  • Belted pivot-wheel sorter. This model from Norpak has two sets of pivot wheels to divert items for efficient, productive sortation. The perfect choice for medium-sized packages.
  • Cross-belt sorter. Includes a chain of carts mounted on the main track, known as a carrier. The carts serve as small, bidirectional conveyor belts. Offers a high density of divert locations and can process a high number of tasks per minute.
  • Narrow belt sorter. With multiple narrow belts separated by pop-up rollers and a compact construction that is appropriate for work environments with limited floor space.
  • Pusher sorter. With a pushing arm that diverts products onto another conveying line, usually positioned perpendicularly to the main line. Also perfect for limited floor space.
  • Sliding shoe sorter. Most suitable for high-speed sortation, with gentle sorting that is recommended for small or fragile items. Built with aluminum slats, with sliding shoes to divert items.
  • Sweep sorter. Similar to the pusher sorter, but with bidirectional paddles. The sweeping mechanism makes it ideal for handling standard poly bags and other small objects.
  • Till tray sorter. With individual parts that facilitate high-density, high-speed sortation, like the cross-belt option. Lined with trays that dispense objects into a chute.
