conveyor specifications

The Norpak team offers top advice on what to look for in a new conveyor system.

Material-handling systems are vital to the efficiency and success of most manufacturing plants and warehouses these days, and Norpak Handling is Canada’s foremost team of experts on them. Conveyor systems come in many forms for different applications, and a business should determine proper conveyor specifications before settling on a new solution.

A recent blog entry by Norpak offers tips on a few important conveyor specifications to be considered when looking for a new product.

Load capacity, speed, and throughput

Norpak identifies three extremely important conveyor specifications to keep in mind. The first, load capacity per unit length, is important to determine early on – particularly for custom systems, since the conveyor length must be able to handle a certain volume of items. If a conveyor is overloaded, the result can be low efficiency at best and damage to the product or system at worst.

The next specification to consider is rated speed, typically measured in feet per minute. This gives the user a clear idea of how fast the conveyor travels in a certain amount of time. Belt conveyors often travel very quickly, for example, but this may be dangerous for fragile products. Rated speed is an important factor in finding a conveyor system that suits how an operation is run.

The third major specification to consider in conveyor selection is throughput – or the conveyor’s capacity in handling the units that it moves. This concept is typically expressed as volume per unit of time. The customer must optimize for this figure in order to determine the system’s efficiency. For instance, if the conveyor uses case packing machines, it is important to consider how many cases are discharged onto the conveyor per minute. Other important factors include the number of lines that are merged into one and the length of each case. These considerations help to determine what speed the conveyor should be to handle the necessary volume of items.

There are other factors to consider, especially for a customized material-handling system. Fortunately, Norpak can offer the proper expertise and guidance to find the perfect product.
