Brüel & Kjær's Type 4448 noise dosimeter

One of many Brüel & Kjær products available through Durham Instruments is the Type 4448 noise dosimeter. This is a shoulder-mounted, cable-free, personal device with a simple two-button operation, an informative LCD display, and an automatic calibration function. Users get several working days of measurement through the dosimeter’s built-in memory and rechargeable battery. Brüel & Kjær produces a standard model and an ATEX-approved version for hazardous conditions.

Measures multiple noise parameters simultaneously

The Type 4448 noise dosimeter has a broad range of uses in various industries. Durham Instruments suggests using it in general manufacturing, aerospace, automation, food processing, forestry, education, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, transportation, and research and development.

Common use scenarios for the Type 4448 include assessment of noise exposure at work, occupational noise evaluation for safety, selection of hearing protection, and as a daily “noise watchdog”. The instrument can measure LAeq and LCeq at the same time, and it uses the Noise Reduction Rating, Single Number Rating, and/or High, Middle, Low rating method to select appropriate hearing protection from measured data.

This noise dosimeter also has an LCD display that clearly shows remaining battery and memory capacity, as well as key parameters during measurements. It also allows users to review data from the last measurement. By measuring all relevant noise parameters simultaneously, it eliminates the need to perform setup tasks, and the interchangeable mounting clips offer the best fit for the user’s activity and clothes. The unlicensed PC software Protector is used to set up Type 4448, download information after measurement, and calculate personal noise exposure.

Other capabilities of this unit:

  • one hundred and eighty hours of logging storage;
  • peak counting, in excess of 135, 137, and 140 decibels;
  • preset measurement time, up to 12 hours;
  • keys and display lock function;
  • LED warning alarm for dangerous noise levels; and
  • rechargeable NiMH battery, for 28 hours of operation time.

Brüel & Kjær offers multiple-unit kits, each holding up to ten dosimeters and accessories, to simplify noise-exposure assessment for multiple workers.
