The Brüel & Kjær Type 4448 noise dosimeter

Brüel & Kjær offers a wide array of test and measurement products, which are available to Canadian businesses through Durham Instruments. For instance, the Type 4448 noise dosimeter is a shoulder-mounted, cable-free, personal device with an easy two-button operation, an automatic calibration function, and an informative LCD display among other features.

With its built-in memory and rechargeable battery, Type 4448 provides several working days of measurement for the user. For hazardous work conditions, this instrument is available in an ATEX-approved model in addition to the standard unit.

No setup tasks required

This noise dosimeter suits a wide variety of tasks in many sectors; examples include assessment of workplace noise exposure, occupational noise evaluation for safety, selection of hearing protection, and as a daily “noise watchdog.” Among the many industries for which Durham Instruments recommends it are general manufacturing, aerospace, automation, food processing, forestry, the medical field, the military, mining, packaging, power generation, alternative energy, transportation, and research and development.

Type 4448 can measure LAeq and LCeq simultaneously and uses the Noise Reduction Rating, Single Number Rating, and/or High, Middle, Low rating methods to choose the proper hearing protection from measured data. The device also has an LCD display the clearly shows remaining battery and memory capacity, plus key parameters during measurement.

The device allows review of information from the last measurement. Measuring all relevant noise parameters simultaneously eliminates the need to conduct setup tasks, while the interchangeable mounting clips provide the best fit for the activity and clothing. The unlicensed PC software Protection is available to set up Type 4448, download info after measurement, and calculate personal noise exposure.

Other capabilities of this instrument include keys and display lock function, LED warning alarms for hazardous noise levels, 180 hours of logging storage, peak counting (in excess of 125, 137, and 140 decibels), preset measurement time of up to 12 hours, and rechargeable NiMH battery for up to 28 hours of operational time. Multiple-unit kits are also available, each of which holds up to ten dosimeters and accessories, to simplify noise-exposure assessment for multiple users.
