valve chamber

Denso petrolatum tape and primer were essential to the protection of this Niagara Region valve chamber.

Denso North America is the country’s best source of petrolatum tape and primers for pipeline protection, road sealing, and more. Another application for these products is waterproofing for sanitary systems, catch basins, and similar structures. If water infiltrates them, it may result in erosion of concrete, potholes in roads from material loss, or treatment of ground water at pollution-control plants. Four years ago, these Denso solutions came in handy during the installation of an underground valve chamber in Thorold, Ont.

Decades of proven, successful performance

Nielsen Tran Mechanical Contractors was concerned with inflow and infiltration (I&I) when Niagara Region officials contracted the company to perform this installation project on Carleton Street. Since I&I could accelerate corrosion of the chamber materials, which could lead to premature appurtenance failure, a permanent waterproofing solution was required for the chamber, which measured 2.7 by 3.3 metres.

To resolve any possible issues, Nielsen contacted Denso, which recommended Denso Petrolatum Tape, often applied to concrete joints for infiltrate prevention. The Nielsen team decided to apply the tape over the entire valve chamber, due to the high water table.

Representatives from Denso trained Nielsen workers on using the former’s Hi-Tack Primer and 12-inch Hi-Tack Tape. The contractor applied a thin, uniform coating of the primer around the entire outside of the valve chamber from the bottom up, before wrapping the structure horizontally with the tape. To waterproof the base of the chamber, the workers had to set it carefully on pre-laid Hi-Tack Tape strips. Curing and drying were not required, so Nielsen could back-fill the chamber immediately.

Denso’s Hi-Tack Petrolatum Tape offers numerous advantages in this application. It is flexible and water-tight, and it prevents infiltration even if the concrete cracks or breaks. Minimal surface preparation is needed, and users can apply it at any time of the year, no matter what the weather is like. The tape also prevents ice-related heaving of risers and frames in winter.

The Niagara Region rests assured that this chamber will stay protected for years, due to the decades of proven, successful performance of Hi-Tack tape.
