gripper module

The compact rotary gripper module EHMD from Festo can handle virtually any gripping task in laboratory automation, no matter how small.

Festo Canada has just introduced the EHMD compact rotary gripper module – a new smallest-in-class device that has been optimized for reliable gripping and rotation of small objects in tight spaces. With fast performance in opening and closing in confined areas, it is perfect for screwing or unscrewing of caps on sample vials with up to 15 millilitres of volume and similar applications in laboratory automation. This unit is available in two versions.

Ideal for pick and place

Unusually quick for such a small device (up to 120 revolutions per minute at full torque), the EHMD has a unique Z module that automatically adjusts to the thread pitches of the caps, which means that no head/adapter changeover times are required. The module is just as effective for applications for in vitro diagnostics, cell or genome research, or quality inspections in the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors. Among these functions are preparing and analyzing samples, loading centrifuges, gripping, rotating, and placing microwell plates or opening and shutting sample vials of various sizes.

This gripper module also has wipe-down surfaces and a clean, compact design that make it especially suitable for operations in laboratory workplaces. Festo highly recommends it for pick-and-place applications in light assembly in the electronics industry, as well as certain tasks in food processing. The EHMD can support quality inspections, rotating samples in front of a bar-code reader, or label printing with a label printer, all when combined with a three-dimensional gantry and a camera.

The EHMD is available in a fully electric model or as a hybrid with a pneumatic gripper, both of which allow infinite rotation. An optional assembly module with Z compensation adjusts automatically to the thread pitch of the caps without moving the Z axis. When powered by the Festo CMMO-ST motor controller, it enables gripping of sample containers of unknown size with different levels of force.
