Ethernet connector

The new ix Industrial® from HARTING enables miniaturization and is 70 per cent smaller than the standard RJ45 Connector.

Among the latest technological innovations from the HARTING Technology Group is the ix Industrial Ethernet connector, a perfect solution for IP20 connectivity applications requiring miniaturization. Although the RJ45 connector has been the go-to choice for Ethernet interfaces in IP20 applications for years, its size limits its miniaturizing ability – so HARTING developed the ix Industrial connector to make smaller possible.

A demand for smaller devices

OEMs are pressing for miniaturized solutions for connecting smaller devices and sensors. The ix Industrial connector boasts a socket size 70 per cent smaller than that of the standard RJ45, to enable device manufacturers to use it in conjunction with much smaller devices. It also provides Cat. 6A performance for 1/10Gbit/s Ethernet at the control level.

For board level connectivity, HARTING offers a small yet robust alternative socket for this Ethernet connector, with five THR shielded contacts for device integration, providing maximum stability on the PCB. The ix Industrial also has stable latching, via two metal hooks, which can be combined with the alternative socket to ensure a strong, secure, and vibration-proof connection from the cable to the circuit board. This is rated for a minimum of 5,000 mating cycles.

For device wiring, HARTING recommends using flexible, thin system cables with a tight bending radius. Users have the option to assemble the ix Industrial with the mating face on both ends or to mix it with the RJ45 connector on opposite ends. This allows for gradual adaptation of individual elements in the control level with no need to revise all systems directly. The ix Industrial interface has been standardized according to IEC/PAS 61076-3-124.

For more than 70 years, HARTING has pushed itself to innovate. As industrial technology continues to change quickly, a connector manufacturer has to adapt to these changing needs and demands. The ix Industrial is part of a proud tradition from HARTING of pioneering just such state-of-the-art solutions.
