The Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS) was developed by the United Nations to promote one universal standard for chemical hazard classification and hazard communication. Though the standard is not compulsory and participating countries are allowed to adopt only portions of it, GHS is still a significant step toward the development of a single global standard.

The purpose of classification under the GHS is to provide harmonized information to users of chemicals with the goal of enhancing protection of human health and the environment. Both the U.S. and Canada have ratified the GHS protocol and will be migrating to the new labelling system respectively on June 1, 2015 (U.S.) and June 1, 2017 (Canada).

Starting on June 1, 2015, Henkel will be introducing new GHS-compliant labels on its product containers. As a chemical manufacturer/importer, it will be required to evaluate the hazards of every industrial product and prepare labels and safety data sheets (SDS) in the new format to convey the hazard information to downstream users. It is important to know that every industrial product label and every safety data sheet will be affected by these changes. Henkel Corporation is committed to complying with the GHS requirements and will ensure compliance by the deadline of June 1, 2015. Canada has an extended deadline where existing labelling will be accepted through June 1, 2017 (manufacturer/import) and June 1, 2018 (distribution).

The most important fact for customers and distributors to know is that what is inside the package is the same high-quality Henkel product they’ve always relied on.

In an effort to educate customers proactively on the changes coming their way, Henkel created a six-minute video highlighting GHS and the changes it is making to ensure compliance. The video can be viewed at: www.henkel-adhesives.com/ghs.
