The new VEAB piezo valve, from Festo

For more than four decades, Festo has benefited Canadian industries with innovative, intelligent automation solutions that cut costs and boost productivity. Now, the manufacturer has launched two unique designs of piezo valves, the VEAA and the VEAB, which rise above standard solenoid valves with their minimal energy use and their optimal precision – resulting in safer and more efficient operations involving flow and pressure control.

Ideal for volatile environments

The VEAA and VEAB are digitally controlled, three-way proportional piezo valves built for a wide variety of industrial applications regarding pressure control – including checking, metering, pressing, and press-fitting functions – but with added benefits. Because they use very little energy and generate almost no heat, they are much safer to use in explosive or volatile work environments. While the VEAA can proportionally control pressures up to ten bar at a flow rate of seven litres per minute, the VEAB is designed for pressures up to six bar at up to 20 litres per minute.

Their accurate, consistent, and quiet operation is a result of a blend of piezo technology and digital closed loop control. Each valve has a piezo bender that does not abrade and is highly resistant to mechanical wear, which guarantees a very long life for the valve in continuous operation: it can last through more than 300 million switching cycles and many set point changes.

Festo’s VEAA and VEAB valves offer repeat precision unlike that of any other pressure-regulating valves on the market. Even with changing air consumption, they conduct accurate regulation according to a preset value with no fluctuations in the output pressure; they can also regulate very small volumes with precision. Both the VEAA and VEAB are IP65-rated as well.

Another advantage of these piezo valves is their ease of installation and operation. Users can simply select control parameters to suit almost any application from the values stored in the electronics. Festo particularly recommends using VEAA and VEAB in applications with low-to-micro air consumption, including small cylinders, grippers, and rotary actuators, and in applications that need very dynamic response characteristics.
