Festo’s new EFSD electric stopper is the ideal choice in stop-and-release wherever an electric actuator is preferred to a pneumatic option.

Festo Canada has launched a new electric stopper cylinder, the EFSD, the perfect choice for stop-and-release applications in which electric actuators are more appropriate than pneumatic ones. This new stopper offers superb stop-and-release functionality in product movement between stations in assembly and transfer systems, with upfront, downstream cost savings.

Key advantages of the EFSD stopper include lower installation costs, quicker commissioning, and significant savings in operational energy.

Available in three sizes

This stopper cylinder can be used in a variety of applications, such as small-parts assembly, packaging, warehousing, and logistics. By choosing a purely electric automation solution, businesses can lower their installation efforts dramatically, since no valves, tubing, or air preparation are necessary to install the EFSD. This is especially important for work environments that currently have no air systems available and where introducing them would be inconvenient. The user uses only two screws to mount the EFSD directly onto the profile of the transfer system.

What distinguishes the EFSD over competing similar products is that it has internal logic processing with digital I/O, which eliminates the need for an external motor controller. This makes installation even easier, as well as commissioning. Its integrated sensors offer feedback on whether the stop plate is extended or retracted, and the adjustable damping module enables highly precise and reliable operation; this damper feature requires less maintenance than shock absorners do. The stopper cylinder also offers flexible damping to correspond to the mass of the transferred item, so that one EFSD size can handle many different types of moving masses.

The EFSD is available in three different sizes – 20, 50, and 100 – which allows users to match the mass range, depending on the conveyor speed up to a maximum of 100 kilograms. The stopper also has a 24-volt DC motor with a maximum power consumption of only 2A, and a PLC connection can supply additional energy, so users do not require a separate connector.

As the world’s leading supplier of automation technology and technical education, Festo always provides the most up-to-the minute solutions for the industrial world.
