Controlling several flow rates with just one piece of hardware is now possible with the app “Flow control” of the Festo Motion Terminal.

The Pack Expo show in Las Vegas last month gave The Festo Group an opportunity to showcase its latest solutions, including two new apps that boost the efficiency, flexibility, and energy savings of nitrogen-gas dosing on filling lines when they are used together. Based on the Festo Motion Terminal and apps for multi-channel flow control and selectable pressure, these apps offer the ability for machine builders to shorten the time to market, use fewer components, and create distinctive products.

Nitrogen flushing on multiple containers

With a flow rate of up to 600 litres per minute to ensure rapid dosing, the Flow Control Motion App allows nitrogen flushing on up to eight containers simultaneously through four valves. The system detects percentage deviation from the specific volume, which creates the opportunity to achieve higher precision with fine tuning. Nitrogen consumption decreases with exact filling.

The second of these new apps, the Selectable Pressure Level app, can move multiple filling nozzles through the dosing process quickly and accurately. Cycle time is shortened by flexible parameterization. After filling is completed, the nozzles are retracted from the containers with less pressure, in order to save energy. Users can employ a third app, Leakage Diagnostics, to make sure the system functions at peak sustainability through early detection of air leaks or compressed gas.

The Motion Terminal is an intellectual valve that changes functionality based on downloadable apps. Machine developers use this device to create a basic machine type and then choose the appropriate Motion Apps to equip it with different functions and features per customer requirements. The ability to copy and transfer parameter sets simplifies planning while shortening the time to market. Bonus advantages of assigning functions through software include preventing tampering and protection of intellectual property.

In addition to these apps, Festo introduced the Simplified Motion Series, or SMS, and the CPX-AP-I decentralized I/O for long conveying systems at its Pack Expo booth.

Festo remains a leading producer of pneumatic and electromechanical systems, components, and controls. The company has constantly raised the state of manufacturing for more than 40 years.
