The new HARTING T1 Industrial connector

HARTING Canada never stops introducing innovations in the field of workplace connectivity. The latest example is the T1 Industrial Ethernet connector: the standard mating face for Single Pair Ethernet (SPE), able to accomplish communication across all common Ethernet protocols with one twisted pair of wires, rather than four or eight wires.

Launched earlier this month, the T1 Industrial can work with Ethernet/IP, Profinet, EtherCAT, and many other common protocols.

Communication, voltage, and amperage

This Ethernet connector brings the communication, voltage, and amperage required to power the device by using power-over-data-line technology. The T1 Industrial reduces the number of connections on the device, which eliminates the need for an external power supply. The devices on a plant floor that have traditionally communicated over Fieldbus protocols can now join the same IP-based network that the other devices are on. This system allows for peer-to-peer communication, open-loop feedback of all devices, and smart functionality between the device and the main control room.

To ensure that the T1 is truly the standard for industrial applications, the HARTING team has designed the mating interface to be the same and inter-operable across all IP ratings. This Ethernet connector has a robust design that provides locking level protection, 360-degree shielding, and high mating cycles.

The T1 Industrial has a mating face that is standardized according to the IEC 63171-6 calibre, and it also meets the IEEE 802.3 requirements for SPE use. The connector comes highly recommended for the construction of future-proof and standardized SPE communication networks with standardized cabling according to ISO/IEC 11801 and TIA 42.

Introduced in March, SPE technology is the result of five years of hard work by HARTING. In addition to the aforementioned advantages – no external power required and network consistency – this innovative new connectivity design also substantially reduces the space and number of connections on the device. The T1 is the core product in this new technology, and HARTING plans to contribute several other components to the SPE ecosystem. This connector ranges from IP20 to IP67, and there are currently metric variants, M8 and M12.
