electric cylinder

Festo’s new EPCE cylinder, the newest addition to the Simplified Motion Series of simple-to-set-up electric drives for simple motion, is ideal for fast movement in sorting, distribution and testing applications.

Festo Canada has expanded its Simplified Motion Series (SMS), an innovative family of electric actuators that is designed to mimic the simplicity of pneumatics in performing simple point-to-point movements and positioning tasks. The SMS has added an exciting new member to this group, the seventh member: the EPCE electric cylinder.

Highly recommended for quick movement in sorting, testing, and distribution applications, the EPCE has an integrated servo drive, a controller and electronics, and two on-board control options as standard, Digital I/O and IO-Link.

Perfect for small spaces

This new electric cylinder converts the rotary motion of the mounted motor into the linear motion of a piston rod or rods through an internal toothed belt drive. With the EPCE toothed belt technology, the user gets maximum dynamic response and minimal positioning times. The unit’s minimal zero stroke and highly compact design make it absolutely perfect for applications involving small spaces.

Numerous variants of the EPCE are available from Festo, based on the location and number of piston rods, left or right, front or rear, and so on. There are units available with one to four piston rods, as well as through-piston rods and dual opposite-direction piston-rod variants, for example.

Like the other six SMS actuators, the EPCE electric cylinder is extremely easy to set up, which makes it ideal for customers who want an economical electrical alternative to pneumatic cylinders that is simpler to activate than standard electric automation solutions are. Commissioning is quick and simple. All of the parameters – speed and force, reference end position and cushioning, and manual operation – are manually set aboard the device; no software special expertise is necessary to get the cylinder going. The IO-Link can enable extended functions, such as remote setting of motion parameters, copy and backup function for transferring parameters, or a read function for extended process parameters.
