Cylinders are a key component in pneumatic drives; however, the majority of cylinders used in process and factory automation applications today are manually adjusted, which leaves room for error. According to Festo, it is estimated that up to 80 per cent of cylinders in the field are set incorrectly due to neglect or mishandling by inexperienced staff. But Festo has a solution. The leading supplier of automation technology recently launched a new range of DSBC standard cylinders with a self-adjusting option.

The benefits of self-adjusting

The new DSBC standard cylinders offer three choices for end cushioning, including the company’s proprietary PPS technology that self-adjusts automatically to changes in air pressure, speed and load.

Cushioning, in fact, is an important consideration when selecting a cylinder. Cushioning absorbs energy at the end of the piston stroke, which results in a reduction of potentially damaging stress and vibration on the cylinder and machine that can also cause damage.

With Festo PPS self-adjusting technology, there is no initial setup of the cushioning, and no need to make manual adjustments on the machine when loads change. PPS cushioning that is constantly self-optimizing means higher cycle rates and a longer service life for the cylinder.

Of course, the cylinders are available with two other end cushioning options for those customers not interested in self-adjustment. The additional options include manually adjustable cushioning (PPV) or fixed elastic end cushioning (P).

More features

DSBC cylinders have a choice of seven diameters up to 125 mm, with stroke lengths up to 2,800 mm. All of the dimension options for the cylinders are ISO 15552 compliant. They boast a powerful, patented piston that absorbs up to five times more cushioning energy in the end position than the previous model the DSBC replaces.

In addition, the DSBC range includes many options, ensuring customers find a cylinder that meets their requirements. These options include variants for slow speed, low friction or unlubricated operations, and configurations that provide high heat or high corrosion resistance, explosion-proofing, special leak-free protection, hard scraping and more.
