Air-quality equipment for workplace environments is the specialty of N.R. Murphy Limited, for applications from mild breathing hazards to extreme dust levels. For the latter, the company makes cyclones, which are perfect for sawmills and woodworking facilities – providing a simple, economical means of separating dust from air in medium-to-coarse worksites.
Cyclones are essential for forestry operations in particular, as they require powerful equipment to collect the large volumes of dust spilled into the air.
Pre-assembled for quick setup
N.R. Murphy supplies cyclones in a broad range of sizes and can manufacture them out of varying materials. They can be used as standalone air/material separators or in conjunction with other dust collectors, and they can also function as primary separators to offer sizing or classification of materials. Many industries use cyclones as primary separators that function ahead of other dust collectors, combining gravity with centrifugal action to achieve dust collection and separation. N.R. Murphy designs these units with higher efficiency on small dust particles, in addition to more updated features.
As cyclones come with varying specifications, customers should consult N.R. Murphy’s technical representatives to select the most appropriate designs and construction materials for their requirements, especially for applications involving severe abrasion or corrosion. The manufacturer recommends collecting a sample of the dust in the environment, since density, concentration, velocity, and specific gravity affect cyclone performance.
Three standard construction designs are available. Standard cyclones are the most popular models and come in multiple sizes; they suit coarse sawdust and shavings or materials with few extreme fines. Users can add long cone spirals and skimmers. Chip cyclones have short cone sections and are recommended primarily for heavy wood chips with minimal fines. High-efficiency units come in different sizes for various capacities, from larger diameters to smaller cyclones.
These rugged designs use heavy gauge carbon steel, abrasion-resistant steel, special alloys, and rubber linings. The standard cyclone design includes heavy gauge wiped galvanized all-welded construction and painting in one of many available colours. N.R. Murphy cyclones are typically pre-assembled before shipping, for quick setup at the customer’s plant.
