N.R. Murphy upgraded Mohawk College's Stoney Creek campus to a FBP-38 Arrangement “A” dust collector.

For three-quarters of a century, N.R. Murphy has helped businesses throughout southern Ontario to improve their air quality, with its lines of standard and custom-fabricated dust collectors, cyclones, fans, and accessories. Its reputation for quality and top service rests upon more than seven decades of customer success stories.

One of those success stories involved Mohawk College of Applied Arts and Technology, which required a dust-collection upgrade at its Stoney Creek campus in 2004.

Adapting to a bigger space

The campus had already been using an N.R. Murphy product since 1969 – an FBP-15 dust collector, which had been perfect for the campus’ previous location on Wentworth Street. But after the campus moved to a bigger building on Barton Street in 1995, the FBP-15 became inefficient for the larger space.

So one of the faculty coordinators at the college, Ken Mercer, got in touch with the company and requested an evaluation of the system. N.R. Murphy’s technical sales representative and inside technical and engineering and support person developed the parameters for an upgrade and proposed a new dust-collection system that could reach 28,105 cubic feet per minute and collect all dust from the shop equipment in the campus building at the same time.

N.R. Murphy won the contract with the FBP-38 Arrangement “A”, a cylindrical shaker-style dust collector that collects waste material in a hopper and empties it though discharge doors. About four metres in diameter and more than 15 metres tall, the FBP-38 also includes explosion venting, a spark-detection and –suppression system, and indicators that monitor the level of collected waste.

The company worked quickly and installed the system in time for Mohawk’s fall semester. Mercer was so pleased with the new system that he contacted N.R. Murphy again to praise the company’s hard work and adherence to budget and schedule.

“The system is everything you said it would be in every way… fantastic,” Mercer wrote in an e-mail, thanking the company for “a job very well done.”

And N.R. Murphy continues to satisfy clients with similar products, solidifying its expertise in reducing air pollution.
