Three models of N.R. Murphy exhaust fan wheels, clockwise from top left: the EH, the EM-1, and the EA-1.

Dust-collection equipment has made N.R. Murphy’s reputation for more than 75 years, but the company’s diverse product range also includes a line of exhaust fans, which help make breathing easier and safer in workplaces. These fans come in a variety of designs, and they also have four different wheel types. Each wheel is made for a specific level of air or material handling.

Aiming for the highest standards

N.R. Murphy’s wheels for exhaust fans have diameters from 31 to 163 centimetres (cm), with circumferences from 97 cm to five metres and inlet diameters from 17 to 94 cm. Outlet areas go from 0.265 to 7.41 square feet, and inlet areas run from 0.258 to 7.27 square feet.

The company always aims for the highest standards. That is why N.R. Murphy builds its own blades for wheels on exhaust fans, designed and engineered according to exacting specifications. Whatever a customer needs, there is a wheel type to suit any application.

Wheel EH is an open wheel designed for virtually any material-handling need. It is made of extra-heavy steel plate to resist severe shock and abrasion in tasks with high material volumes. EH is recommended for handling air containing small wood blocks, knots, or paper trims with nose cones in their designs.

Wheel EHL has a design similar to that of EH, but for standard industrial material-handling needs. Wheel EM-1, meanwhile, is also similar to EH, but with slightly more efficiency, plus a back plate and individual blade supports for more strength and rigidity. The plate prevents wood shavings and long, fibrous, or stringy material from wrapping around the blades. EM-1 is recommended for sawdust chips and similar items.

The most efficient of these four wheel designs is Wheel EA-1. This is constructed to withstand high shock and abrasion in applications with high material volumes. EA-1 includes a backward-inclined, radial-tipped design with a coned shroud and back plate for added rigidity and strength; this controlled inlet clearance guides airflow. Recommended for handling relatively clean air and pulling air through filters and separators, but not for materials.
