Sudbury International offers metallic expansion joints.

Sudbury International Engineered Products Limited has achieved nearly half a century of satisfying businesses with long-term, cost-effective solutions. Whether fabric, rubber, or dog-bone joints, especially for ducting, expansion joints make up a large portion of the supplier’s product selection. The company is also a major source of metallic expansion joints, also known as compensators, and it relies on collective expertise and experience to help customers choose the best options for their specific applications.

Pipelines, containers, and more

Invented in 1920 by Emil Witzenmann in Germany, metallic expansion joints are compensating elements for thermal expansion and relative movement. Each unit consists of at least one metal bellow (which is made with a multi-ply design), a connector at each end, and some form of tie rods, depending on the application. Pipelines, containers, and other kinds of equipment often rely on the Sudbury International selection of compensators. The joints are also useful in tasks that involve thermal movement or vibration in such sectors as water treatment, energy, chemicals, pulp and paper, and oil and gas.

Metallic expansion joints are usually classified by manufacturers and suppliers according to their types of movement. The first category available from Sudbury International, axial compensators, consists of joints that absorb the thermal expansion of a straight-lined section between two fixed points. The distance between the points determines the length of the pipeline that requires compensation and, by extension, the axial movement that the joint needs to achieve.

The second type is angular expansion joints. At least two angular compensators are necessary for angular compensation of thermal expansion. Full compensation often requires three of them. These units provide many combination options for two- or three-hinge systems.

The third option, known as lateral compensators, is associated with flow redirection by a right angle in single-place or multi-place piping systems. The typical practice is to install these expansion joints in existing 90-degree redirections in these piping systems. The movement of this compensator consists of the required lateral movement and a small axial movement from the joint.

Whatever the application, Sudbury International has the perfect solution.
